Welcome to this latest attempt to connect librarians from west-central Wisconsin with each other! Please send in content (booklists, ideas, photos, etc.), and comment on posts so we can help each other. If you were using feedmyinbox to get new posts sent to you before, you'll need to switch to another service (blogtrottr works like feedmyinbox, googlereader is a good blog-reader to try).

Families Playing in Hawkins

As part of the LSTA Early Literacy grant this year, several libraries received mini-grants, either to help promote family engagement, or to help with media mentor efforts.  Here's what Arlene and Marena did in Hawkins:

"The Hawkins Area Library purchased fun, new additions for our children's area to encourage parents/caregivers to interact with the children while at the library and hopefully at home also.
Playing store

We held a " Family Engagement" event during one of preschool story times to unveil the new items, we also had books on display that could be used with each of the items and explained how easy and how much fun is to read a story and then play(engage) with their little ones.
More playing store!

Everyone had  a great time and these items have been a huge hit and are being used on a regular basis, children & adults."

Fulfilling the Promise Conference

For the past year or so, I've been having enjoying the chance to get together regularly with my colleague Karen Morris, a Maternal and Child Health regional consultant for the Department of Health.  It's so exciting to spend time with someone who sees so many opportunities for libraries and other agencies to work together effectively.

Today, Karen shared information with me about a 3-day conference coming up at the end of the month, Fulfilling the Promise:  A conference for parent educators, home visitors & their partners.  It looks like a fascinating conference, a terrific look inside the work of professionals who are doing important work with families.  Though I can't go, and I'm guessing the time frame is a little too short for most of you to attend, I wanted to bring it to your attention, maybe for next year!
